On Wednesday, the Union Health Ministry released a list of dos and donts to avoid contracting monkeypox. The World Health Organisation declared the viral infection a public health emergency of international concern in July. In India, nine cases have been detected so far—five from Kerala, and four from Delhi, with no recent travel history.
Among the do’s, the health ministry has advised an isolation period of 3 weeks so that the infected person does not spread the disease to others. The guidelines also suggested the use of hand sanitizers, washing hands with soap and water, and covering the mouth with masks to avoid contracting the disease. The guidelines directed healthcare professionals and patient contacts to use disposable gloves to cover their hands when close to a patient. Also, disinfectants should be used to sanitize the environment around the patients.
